| INTERNATIONAL TRENDS |
In 1978, the national office of The Links, Incorporated added the International Trends and Services program facet in recognition of the interconnected social, political, and economic relationships that African Americans and the United States have with peoples in Africa, South Africa, and Asia.
Programs sponsored by the International Trends and Services Facet:
- Human Rights Day Awards: Seattle Links participate in the international Council for Human Rights and secured membership to the United Nations Association. As part of these organizations, the Seattle chapter celebrated Human Rights Day and United Nations Day. United Nations Day was held in October and the Human Right Day was held in December.
- International Roundtable discussions: Designed to promote international understanding and network of contact persons for Seattle Links desiring to link with other nations culturally and economically. The roundtable discussions featured talks by visiting scholars from other countries and also African Americans who had recently visited foreign countries.
- Hubert Humphrey Fellows Program. The Fellows of the University of Washington School of Public Affairs is a vital part of our “Adopt A School “ Initiative at the African American Academy. The Fellows meet with Academy faculty to discuss issues of elementary and middle school education in the United States in comparison to their own countries.
- Project Mombassa was a program where local African American students were given presentations about the lack of teaching materials, books, and other resources for schools in Mombassa, Kenya. The students collected school supplies for the children that were then sent to Kenya.
- Heritage Unity project is in it’s second year. Greater Seattle Chapter in collaboration with other African and African American organizations come together in February and celebrate each other at Seattle Central Community College. The event in February 2008 will be held on February 8, 2008.
