| SERVICE TO YOUTH |
The idea of this program grew out of awareness that much of the talent among minority youth was not fully realized. The chartering group related that is was important for youth to be recognized, motivated, and afforded the opportunity to use their talents. To accomplish this, the Greater Seattle Chapter instituted an annual Youth Awards program.
The Services To Youth Awards Program acknowledges commitment to the community and celebrates educational achievement. As part of our 50th anniversary celebration in 2005, a post celebration was held for students, their families, and school representatives.
K – 11th grade students are given acknowledgment for their academic achievement for the past school year by receiving a certificate as well as a token of appreciation (i.e., backpack, dictionary, savings bond etc.) Graduating seniors who meet certain criteria are eligible to apply for financial scholarships. The STY Committee typically awards between $65,000 and $75,000 in scholarships to deserving students. Parents, teachers, corporate and community leaders are invited to attend.
